As our way to honour Mother’s Day, we want to share a spirited conversation we recently captured with Natalie our founder and her daughter Hattie, who moved back home just a few months ago.
Natalie and Hattie talk about their experience of living back together, their shared passions, laughs and moments of joy.
Natalie – Living back with Hattie? Well, we never have a dull moment…
Hattie – Yes, we laugh a lot! Every day is very fun, in a way you never know what you are going to get in the morning. And Mum is so positive and makes everyone around her happy.
Natalie – Being a mother, for me, it has been a very special time. There have been some terrible minuses with the whole tragedy of Covid, but looking at the positives, we have had some lovely times as a family together and perhaps it has shown us to value our relationships a little more and to be a little bit kinder.
I love having people around me and having Hattie has been a real bonus as she inspires me and fuels my excitement for new designs. We enjoy supporting each other. We are very much a working family and that is very important to me.
Hattie – It was the right choice! I have really enjoyed being back home and love working alongside Mum. We will never have this time again to enjoy these moments together. It has made me take a step back, I don’t take everything for granted anymore, like going to a restaurant, being with your friends, your family, even just going to a gallery at a weekend.
Natalie – It has always been about the design and the production process. Designs that are both beautiful and purposeful. I love the process of Slow Fashion which gives far greater scope to being creative. I care about how our clothing is produced, from the initial concept to the materials we use, right through to the final production. I consider every step of the process to be important and I am proud of what Really Wild has become.
Hattie – We are so similar on this! Like Mum, my creativity drives me; it is an amazing feeling when you go through all the initial processes and end with the final result, something that you are proud of. I love the excitement that comes with it.
Natalie – Yes! The real highlight for me is to see our Really Wild women loving it and wear it every day. It makes me feel fulfilled and honoured at the same time.
And Hattie is the same. For Hattie, her creativity shows in absolutely everything she does, from the way she designs her bedroom to the way she cooks.
Hattie – I am such a control freak, the whole family are! We are all control freaks and if we want to do something, we like to do it on our own. But then somehow, we have similar ideas, which is nice.
Hattie – Mine is quite a recent one – it is when we march up the hill every day for our daily walk at lunchtime together. We get on top of the hill and we just sit in the sun and take everything in around us and you do not think of anything except the moment you are in. You just enjoy the peace.
Natalie – Hattie is the most fantastic cook; I have been spoiled rotten by her food, she cooks every night for us and has incredible flavours, she could open a restaurant. It is all very creative and artistic. It has been so spoiling not to have to think of meals. I am a lazy cook and do not experiment like Hattie does. She is all about creative healthy eating.
Natalie – Although I feel equally at home in the city, for me the wild is freedom of being in countryside. The light on the landscape, wherever you are, it inspires me. It is the promise of a lifestyle that is more relaxed-something we have all learnt to appreciate during Covid. A more fulfilling lifestyle.
Hattie – Being at home in the countryside rejuvenates me after life in London and to also be with my dog, Jasper who follows me everywhere! I couldn’t live without him. Although chickens would be nice too…
Natalie – ow yes, she wants chickens!
What she taught me…
Hattie – (Long pause)… to be spoiling and thoughtful, I think!
Natalie – To be positive, to smile through the tough days.
What I’d like to tell her…
Hattie – Mum is intense, but I love her.
Natalie – I adore her company and having her around.
The books we love…
Hattie – The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse By Charlie Mackesy
Natalie – C’est La Folie By Michael Wright
The artists we adore…
Hattie – Edgar Degas
Natalie – William Turner
Natalie – The Puffed Sleeve Shirt in Sunshine Yellow as it makes me happy! I designed this piece with a sense of optimism in mind. It encourages me to think of warmer times ahead and holidays abroad if we are lucky! It also has a coordinating skirt which will look great for an al fresco lunch in the Summer – life’s simple pleasures! It’s made with Italian silk, as part of our collaboration on print fabrics with Liberty of London, and the styling options are endless.
Hattie – The Ledbury Blazer, an instant update to any Spring wardrobe, especially with some flares and a white tee. It’s made with this wonderfully soft and lightweight wool cloth created in collaboration with Lovat Mill. It’s timeless and so versatile. I prefer to invest in key staples that you can wear over and over again and Ledbury is definitely one for my wardrobe.
